A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step 千里之行，始於足下

Laozi

This quotation from Laozi written 2500 years ago in a founding text, the Tao Te Ching (The Book of the Way and of Virtue) invites us to travel, an intimate journey, alone, with others, and reminds us that movement is at the heart of our lives and our projects.

I took this first step twenty years ago when I first arrived in Mongolia to serve my country as a young Embassy Attaché, in the land of eternal blue skies?

Today, I continue to travel with as much passion and amazement the millennial roads traced between East and West.

These great roads are, of course, those that we designate by the generic term of Silk Road. But this great Silk Road is also the great road of religions, sciences, diplomats, wars and epidemics. Above all, it is the great road of knowledge, of great travellers and storytellers.

My childhood was nourished by this imagination. From the great historical frescoes told in the films of Bertolucci or Zhang Yimou about Peking and the intrigues of the Forbidden City to the tales of adventures and journeys of the great explorers. Sounds of cities such as Samarkand, Bukhara with its fabulous Chinese Yellow Mountains and the Gobi Desert which you cross at night by train by the transmongolian and which then goes to Lake Baikal a little further up in Siberia…

These are also the events of 1989 and my personal story, that of the grandson of political refugees from Czechoslovakia on my mother’s side and from France to Morocco on my father’s side, the story of a child who had the privilege of crossing worlds and the Iron Curtain every summer throughout the 80s. It is also the story of my life as a father of three children, now expatriated with my wife to the heart of Europe.

This story or these stories, I am happy to tell them, to share them, to bring them to life and to create new ones every day with you.
